Importance Of Getting The Health Coach Certification

By Elizabeth McDonald

Over X years of experience, PMD, SSG, FDR certified (yes, they are supposed to be random, sorry if I actually name a real one!) with an excellent smile in the profile picture - some could actually be in a toothpaste advertisement - or a deep thinking and profound look. Through a good health coach certification program, the coaches get impressive professional profiles, especially due to the weight of the words they use: change, promotion, development, achievement, harmonious, fulfillment, success etc. These are heavy words we're usually having trouble with one at a time. Yet a coach seems to have a nonchalance in juggling with them, all at the same time if necessary.

A fitness trainer can also be a licensed nurse or social worker providing support to members of a health insurance plan, an employer group or a community fitness center. These kinds of coaches can support weight loss goals but can also provide a much wider scope of social and community services and are most often available at no cost but are available only to those with greatest fitness or psychosocial risks.

Being a wellness coach is also not just all about philanthropy, it is also a business and a source of income. Before engaging into the field of counseling, determine the salary range that you could expect to make in a month. You can't just offer your services for free and it takes a lot of hard work too so make sure that you are paid for what you and your services are worth.

So how does a wellness coach... Well, coach? Every coach has their own style and each will tailor the methods to meet their patient's needs. Some might do phone meetings; others may do one-on-one meetings and yet another might offer some group options or training videos. There are also coaches that focus on certain genders or certain age groups.

There are many schools which offer certification for health and wellness coaches. Some schools offer distance learning, while others offer online classes or weekend attendance. Look closely at several schools and compare their qualifications, tuition, and the success of their graduates.

If you decide to commit to a program that comes with a structured process or product, you will want to see if there are coaches available as part of that service and use those resources rather than contracting with additional resources. If you enroll in a specific weight loss program, then hire an independent coach with a different philosophy you will constantly be in conflict with the direction provided and while the instruction may not be wrong, it can be confusing causing you to lose confidence in their advice or the program.

Do some research with fitness trainers in your area and ask the amount of salary that you could expect when you enter this business. Consider the demographics of your area, the economy, the population and other factors that may affect your counseling venture. Being a wellness coach also requires financial investment so make sure that you can expect a return or revenue in your area.

Ask about their experience they may have already have with their fitness training career and find out what type of career options they have discovered. You can also inquire politely about their income they've received as a fitness trainer. Some health and wellness coaching schools offer discounts to friends and family of alumni, which could be an added benefit to contacting a recent grad of a nutrition school you are considering.
