By Elizabeth Powell

Be happy if your child is on his way to college because this is the heart desire of many parents. They want their children to be done with education as fast as possible so that they can handle some responsibilities. Those that have companies they wouldn't want to give to outsider wait patiently for this their children to complete post-primary and college education. To make things happen fast, you may need help with college admissions for your child when you see that he now possesses certain qualities.

As a first-year student in the new environment, all may not be rosy. Your child may find it difficult to survive if he is not used adapting to a new environment. That is why before this time, it is important to allow him or her to visit uncles, aunts and other relations so that they can adapt to other environments that are different from home.

The ability to say what is right and wrong is a sign of maturity and being able to execute the right actions without being afraid of the consequences is also a quality of those who are truly independent. Children lack this quality but it is expected that by the time they are due for college education, they should have it. However, this is not always the case. If your own child does not score high in your rating of being independent, you may have to keep him at home for another year.

It is not strange to see some students above 15 still bed wetting. If your child still has this problem, it is better to allow him to go to college from home. This is because wetting his bed in school when in the hostel can bring him some shame. With that shame alone, he may not be able to concentrate on his academics.

Before saying goodbye to him, be sure that he can perform certain tasks by himself. He should be skillful in cleaning his environment at least. This is because he will be frequently mocked if he cannot do any of these. He should also be able to wash his clothes and iron them properly.

Another important character you must see in him is reading even in the night. You should see him being apt with time management so as to make the best use of the day. If he did not pass most of his post-elementary math quizzes, he may have to stay one more year at home attending tutorials to sharpen his math skills especially if he is gunning for courses such as engineering and accountancy.

You can be friends with the parents of your child's classmates in secondary school when you are processing his admission. This is to guide you during the application process. But this should not be done if you don't see that enthusiasm in your child to leave home for a higher school.

You will be sorry for yourself if your child was offered a scholarship and you failed to secure him admission within the stipulated time. If someone has promised to help pay his fees until he is out of school provided he gets in at a particular time, you may need to find some help so that it won't slip away.
