The Importance Of Prevention Of Medical Errors Course

By Coleen Torres

In the health related field, several mistakes due occur some due to negligence and others ignorance on the professionals side. This badly affects both the family and the patients because while some of the mistakes may be reversible, some are irreversible and permanent such as amputating of body parts etc . Some mistakes may also result to death. It is because of such mistakes that the prevention of medical errors course are advisable to be taken by medics.

Due to the short time and a lot of work while in medical schools, medical students hardly get the time to learn the many things that could add them knowledge and make them more professional in their field with all that is needed. It is for this reason that the short courses are necessary. These courses can be done in between the main course or after completion.

The main aim/objective of this course is to prevent the many mistakes that might happen and also to show that the medic has the knowledge to take care of any medical related situation and can identify the root cause of a problem and also be able to explain the cause and know solution. After the cause they should be able to know how to prevent the problem from happening again and how the patients and their family should take care of themselves.

Not having this knowledge might be like a disadvantage to the health care providers because in case of any mistake, they might lose their jobs or even be sued by the patient/the family. They might also have it always in their conscience that a patient suffered an irreversible situation or even died because of them. There can never be a case of negligence or carelessness.

The other objective that could also affect the medical professionals is that they could be sued by the patients family for negligence. The family of the patient also loose so much in that they will still have to pay for the mistakes of the service providers for things such as corrective surgery and even the time and money spent in the courts if they so decide to sue the hospital.

Having identified the many objectives we also have some benefits of the taking the short study. They are; it makes it easier for medics to identify a mistake and correct it effectively. They also do not only correct the errors but they also know how to prevent them. They can easily identify whether a patient is naturally sick or they have a problem due to the errors done on them before.

The benefits of the study to the health care providers are also numerous such as, no risk of doing the wrong treatment on a patient which might cause you to lose your job, confidence while working on a patient, knowing exactly how to deal with different problems, and knowing how to identify a certain problem and any corrective measures to take.

Short courses are therefore important, though not necessary as they prepare the student to go out in the field with more knowledge as compared to the ones who do not take them.
