How To Curb New York Traffic

By Tammie Caldwell

The city of New York is very densely populated. It is one of the biggest and the most densely populated cities in the world. When in New York expect to find lots of movements of people, trains, motor, vehicles motorcycles and bicycles . You may also on some occasion see tricycles and animals such as dogs and cats. Carts are another means of transport of goods that you may see. All these movements are the causes of New York traffic.

This can be described as the number of people and vehicles that are moving from direction one to the other. These movements may exceed a certain sustainable limit. When this happen then jams occurs leading to delays and slow or lack of movements thereof in the road. This is because one must wait for the other vehicle ahead to move before they can move.

The city has many superhighways that have more than six lanes. Despite this, the problem still persists. It can be attributed to the influx of motors into the highway being greater than the number coming out. Thus, there are other causes that results to the traffic apart from the number or sizes of the road.the number of lanes also do not matter.

Accidents or incidents that happen cause delays in the movements of vehicles. They may lead to diversions and usage of longer routes. When an accident happens drivers are forced to consistently brake to avoid bumping onto to the vehicle that is in front. Although accidents results to traffic jams, the traffic may also cause accidents.

This city has projects and infrastructures that are always coming up. All this construction requires supplies which are delivered by slow moving large trucks. It is a common sight for this large motors moving very slowly on the lanes. Roads are also in need of repairs or expansions and these usually result to too many vehicles being stuck so as to allow the works to continue.

Sometimes the weather is very harsh. Extreme snowfalls results to very slippery roads. Drivers are forced to drive slowly and carefully. They therefore have to brake frequently. This means that they spend more time on the road. In return the fuel consumption goes up and travel cost also. Other situations such as a cop giving a warning to an offender may also result to jams.

The City authority has been trying to look at various ways to reduce jams. The fundamental principle is that the supply must meet demand. This means that the roads available must be able to support the available vehicles. Road networks are very expensive and long term and continuous process.

Among the ways that are being used is providing special lanes for vehicles with a high occupancy. This is known as car pooling. People who share cars are given the privilege of using the fast flowing lanes. Other methods that are being used are ramp metering. This method allows cars to enter the highways or lanes at timed interval. It has been showed to lower accidents and improve traffics speeds.
