Get A Jewish History Timeline Poster

By Anita Ortega

The Jews are a unique people. They have endured over centuries of well-documented turmoil or times of peace, been destroyed and then restored as a nation, and have been scattered around the world in a way no other population has been. But they still endure, and a Jewish history timeline poster helps follow this amazing story.

Jews have endured as a people through centuries of turmoil and conflict, being expelled from their homeland of Israel again and again and scattered throughout the world. It's a remarkable story, and a timeline is helpful in keeping it straight. Israel was restored as a homeland for the Jews after World War II and is of extreme importance to the balance of power today.

History happens all over the world, and knowing what was going on in different places on a certain date is both fun and essential to true understanding. A graph that shows a narrow sequence of events or a broad overview is an easy way to follow through the years or to locate a certain occurrence for reference. A simple list is also good, but visual aids sometimes work better in a classroom.

Creation is the beginning of this story, but the race is established about 2000 BC when Abraham and Sarah leave their native land to follow their God. They have a son, Issac, whose son Jacob has twelve sons who became twelve tribes. At the end of 400 years of slavery in Egypt, the population has exploded. Most people are familiar with at least the outline of the exodus and the 40-year trek to the 'promised land.'

The Jews became scattered over the face of the earth, but they never lost their identity. They lived at times in peace in England and Europe, but were expelled over and over from different countries. However, they were invited into others. Over the years, they suffered terrible persecution including - but not only - the Holocaust under Hitler, and finally were once again established in Israel after the Second World War.

Throughout a long history of rise and fall, the Jewish holy books and their laws were developed and finally written and printed. These significant dates are recorded on historic timelines, along with wars and such things as Nobel prize awards. The development of the people and the nation of Israel is also the evolution of their religion; one cannot be separated from the other.

Go online to see the different kinds of posters available. Some are sold as fine art or displayed in museums, while others are simple line graphs. Colorful, illustrated ones make thoughtful presents for teens celebrating their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. You can find lists for reference online in many sites, since scholars know how important this tool is to students of history.

Some can be downloaded for free. Others are beautifully illustrated and make great Bar/Bat Mitzvah gifts. This resilient people and their tiny nation - about the size of New Jersey - are of immense importance to the world, both in the past and today. From the time of Abraham to the tense situation in the Middle East today, Israel has been in the center of things whether they like it or not.
