Discovering Charitable Programs Through Cheyenne Arapaho Tribes

By Stella Gay

While there are many different areas in which Native Americans contribute money to charities, one of the most popular is that of education. Take the Cheyenne Arapaho Tribes, or Wiyott which are two offering such programs. Most often these are subsidized through players at various Indian casinos. The Lucky Star and Blue Lake casinos are two which offer this type of support for Native American students.

One of the best of these programs is the tribe's Johnson O'Malley Program or JOM, this particular program supports tribal students with various educational needs. Generally, members of a Players Club at various casinos whom have losses automatically donate some aspect of the loss to these programs. Unfortunately, not all casinos provide this support to local students.

Currently, two well known tribes which do have these support networks are the Wiyot tribe in California out of Blue Lake which operates a charitable program out of Blue Lake Casino and that of the Cheyenne Arapaho tribe. A number of similar programs also exist in Arizona at various establishments which are run by different local tribes. Unfortunately, states like Texas and some on the east coast have been slow to accept Indian casinos which equates to a loss of educational support for Native American students living in those areas.

Anyone visiting an Indian casino in any area may want to inquire as to if such a program exist. For, while it will not help recover losses like the IRS, it can help make losing somewhat easier by knowing that part will go to a good cause. Of course, it is important to remember that while individuals can report losses to the IRS, winnings over a certain amount must also be reported.

Free play is often a big aspect of these donations. Generally, a casino will provide free money to new members and host events for residents in the area. Some of these may include concerts, tattoo festivals, wedding shows or other events in which locals may hold an interest. One of the newest areas in which a number of these casinos are becoming involved is in building on-site hotels.

When living in an area which houses an Indian casino or casinos, it is often good to sign up with the players club. There are also a number of events, concerts and other fun days to which members often get advance notice. As such, it can often be easier to obtain tickets to sold out concerts even before tickets go on sale to the general public. For seniors living in these areas, senior days can be quite fun whether offering only free money, food or drinks.

While some players may win on this free money, others often lose. As with all casinos, there is never a guarantee of winning. As such, those whom do not have the money to lose may want to avoid using personal funds and strictly focus on playing during times in which these free monies are available.

The monies are often used for different needs associated with education. These can include supplies, breakfast and lunch programs for low income students, class fees, correspondence courses and driver education fees. In some cases, funds may also support low income students with regards to medical assistance and summer camp fees. While there are also funds for head start and other associated programs, most often the funds are applied toward elementary through high school level studies.
