The Best Terminal Illness Books

There are numerous titles that can be of help to persons who are terminally ill. The authors give personal accounts or experiences as care givers, relatives or friends who have nursed the sick in their sunset years. Terminal illness books are meant to encourage the sick and their care givers through the examples of characters in the stories.

The Fault in Our Stars- a teenage girl has just been diagnosed with cancer. She is enlisted into to a support group alongside teenagers with other terminal conditions. John Green narrates how these teenagers handle their conditions and how they still find love and socialize to make their condition easier to handle.

My Sisters Keeper- Randy Pausch focuses on the reaction of a person when he learns that he is terminally ill. A lot goes through the mind at that point leading to anxiety and abrupt decisions. As a caregiver, spouse, friend or guardian, these are very crucial observations to make. The book is thus very resourceful if such a patient is under your care.

Before I die- Jenny Downham takes you through the life of a patient with only a few months to live. Amidst hospital appointments, drugs with devastating side effects and numerous tests, she comes up with a To Do Before I Die List. The number one on the list is surprisingly sex. The new experiences emanating from the To Do List bring her failing body to life. It is an interesting look at the final stages of life.

Deadline- Ben Wolf always dreamed about that final year. It turns out that he has a terminal disease and will have to change his plans. Within the remaining one year he has sets out to be an excellent footballer, save his drunkard friend and give a headache to his civics teacher. In his attempt to keep his mission a secret, he discovers that other people too have secrets.

Me and the Earl and the Racing Girl- high school espionage intrigues Greg Gaines. He has an accomplice named Earl. Gregs mother forces him to get back with Rachel, a girl diagnosed with leukemia. An idea pops out that Greg can make a movie about Rachel. It is rated The Worst Ever but it acts as a springboard to stardom for Greg, Earl and Rachel. It is now a battle to keep up with the demands of being in the limelight for Greg.

Ruin is a 250 pages book by Rachel van Dyken. The main character is in denial about the things she has witnessed. Bouts of depression are all she has known. It stays as such until Michals Wes appears. The girl thought that the new experiences would mean something new to her. The entry of Wes becomes her downfall instead of lifting her. How this happens is intriguing to read over the fast paced book.

Death of a Super Hero- Donald is a teenager who has learnt of his condition and is now lost into sex, drugs and loud music. McCarten explores the perception that care givers and those surrounding the terminally ill understand what they need better than the patients. The parents and teachers enlist the assistance of a psychologist, but will that help or will they need the psychologists instead?
