Each year thousands of students approach their college admission tests with a mixture of trepidation, hope and high expectations. They have good reason to be a little bit stressed. After all, their places in the best colleges may very well depend upon the scores they achieve during these tests. By starting early with serious SAT prep Palm Beach FL students can be more confident about their chances for success.

Not all colleges require applicants to submit their scores in the admission tests. The fact remains, however, that few reputable colleges will admit a new student unless he not only sat for the tests, but also obtained a good score. Admittance to a good college can be vital for the future success of all young people. This is why most students still prepare for and sit for these stressful tests.

It would be wrong to think that the scores obtained in the admission test is the only basis used to make admission decisions. Many colleges also require consistently good high school results. Some even consider social and environmental factors. For example, applicants that also partake in sport and that do charity work are seen as balanced individuals that are more likely to make a contribution to the college environment.

Many people think that only those with exceptional intelligence can do well in the tests. This is most certainly not the case. The tests are not designed to test aptitude, intelligence or general knowledge. Instead, it is designed to test the proficiency of the student in those areas that are deemed critical for success in college. The test areas are writing, mathematics and critical reading.

The College Board, a US not for profit organization, owns and administers the tests. Apart from the standard test, they also offer students the opportunity to sit for additional Subject Tests. These tests measure their proficiency in very specific subjects. Doing well in Subject Tests can earn students credits at most colleges. Some colleges even require applicants to sit for specific tests prior to admission.

Most students opt to sit for the tests during their junior year in high school. In this way they can sit for the test again in their senior year if they do not achieve the desired result the first time round. Many students even see the first test as a sort of practice round. During the second round of tests they are less stressed and they know exactly what to expect.

Many students start their preparations early. They buy study guides, attend special courses and they enrol for online tutoring sessions. The College Board maintains that the guidelines that they issue are sufficient to prepare for the tests but there are still numerous vendors offering better results and more efficient preparations. Students and their parents should be careful to use only reputable vendors, preferably only those that are underwritten by experts and educational authorities.

There can be little doubt that good scores in the SAT is important. Admission to a good college can be the first step towards a rewarding and lucrative career. Most reputable and desirable colleges have limited places and it is only natural that they will award those places to students most likely to excel.
